Past Events

Updated April 2005

Niaal Holder Grading: Niaal Holder has gone through his 2nd Kyu grading and we applaude him for surviving what was a 1 1/4 hour ordeal. Niaal is the most senior of HRGB's Kyu grade students, has risen strongly through the ranks, and is well respected by all his peers. Accordingly we have just nominated him for the Molum Combat Art's Most Outstanding Senior Student Award.

IAOMAS Honour Roll Award: Congratulations to Sonia Joseph for being nominated to the IAOMAS Honour Roll. The Honour Roll recognises values that are aligned with the IAOMAS, and which complement great martial arts training. This years criteria is 'friendliness'. As a credit to our organisation, everyone voted for everyone else, and it was extremely difficult to produce a winning candidate. However, as all would attest, we are all very fond of Sonia. We've also been missing her at practice as she's had to recover from a car accident a couple of months ago that has left her with residual pain. Get better soon!

Corporate Training: Based on Colin's manuscript, we are now developing a corporate lifestyle program for a consulting group in Singapore looking to use Perth as a corporate retreat. This program will be a week long session incorporating martial philosophies and a 'white collar boxing' session. We should see some progress of this prospect later in the year.

Colin Wee Promotion: With our affiliation with the Molum Combat Arts Association, Colin's grade again came under scrutiny and it was deemed that Colin was due for a promotion to the title of 'Renshi' or 4th degree black belt. The promotion was coordinated and awarded by Director Tim White of the Molum Combat Arts Association. Shodai Bryan Robbins has been notified of this promotion and heartily approves.

Molum Combat Arts Alliance: HRGB is happy to have been invited by Molum Director Tim White. Molum Combat Arts Association features an eclectic style comprising of Kung Fu and Jujutsu. This alliance allows us to increase the transparency of our syllabus and adminstration, with Tim and Colin talking very often about such issues online. Molum has also been very supportive, extending their student recognition and awards system to our our students. Colin is still working out details of a more formal collaborative alliance partnership, but in the end, this alliance is to help us improve while retaining self steering of our own organisation.

Fighting Heaven and Earth Manuscript: Colin has been working for more than a year to form this Kata Bunkai manuscript. The premise is that the patterns used in Taekwondo contain a strategic framework that guides instruction of the style, combat innovativeness, and learning of the techniques. The manuscript has been labelled as a unique and inspirational coaching manual. Book proposals have been submitted to two well known martial arts publishers so far.

IAOMAS Month: In conjunction with the Wu Wei Dao Martial Arts Academy, Western Australian branches of IAOMAS arranged for a full month of martial arts seminars. Styles presented: Chinese Kung Fu, Wado Ryu Karate, Okinawan Karate, and Aikijujutsu. The Wu Wei Dao clan were extremely hospitable and shared with us their wonderful dojo.

Welcome to John Gallagher: HRGB extends a warm welcome to a great new addition to our club. John is a Wado Ryu Karate black belt who has recently immigrated to Perth, and now loving it. John is excited with our martial arts syllabus, and we're working with him to get him certified in our style and grade him upwards in his own style.

IAOMAS Seminars (June 2004): HRGB hosted it's first martial arts conference, with fellow IAOMAS member Wu Wei Dao Martial Arts Academy. Titled 'Doing magic with the martial arts: making your hands and feet appear from nowhere surely to astound and annoy your training buddies'. The seminar was to focus on opening up the practitioner's perspective to novel ways of looking at sparring. In exchange, Nenad Djurdevic, Kancho of Wu Wei Dao also took the time to share with us his Okinawan art and his extremely difficult exercise regiment. Everyone also enjoyed the lunch we had at Han's Cafe in Nedlands afterward.

This was a shortened version of the original 3 hour Self-defence and Personal Safety program, but covered the same essential elements and the themes that we have been promoting throughout our development courses. This development course was fully booked and we had 27 people in total attending. Apart from some having trouble finding the venue, everyone enjoyed the self-defence program and some enquired about follow up courses and separate group sessions (South Perth).
