Colin's Personal Training Regime

What is your long term view of sports and fitness?
My aim is to maintain a high lifelong fitness level. It inspires me to see men and women who have maintained their fitness way past 60. My own sporting career has previously seen me pushing myself a little more than what is good, but I've been quite happy with my schedule in the past couple of years, given all my other responsibilities and the constraints of coaching other people.

What are your current training objectives?
While I'm not above trying to look good, my main aim is to continue to perform well as a martial artist. This means a balance of strength, flexibility, speed, agility, and endurance.

What is your approach to training?
I've never wanted to limit myself to one type of routine. That is to say you wouldn't find me at the gym on a daily basis. My routine is a mix between free weights, calisthenics, running, and martial arts exercises. I aim to work out every day, which means to say if I don't get to work out on a specific day or I don't feel like working out one a specific day, I still exercise at least 5-6 days in a week. I think a flexible rotating schedule helps to moderate any obsessiveness that might otherwise develop.

What is this flexible rotating schedule?
Since I'm no longer competitive, I don't have the need to establish a yearly, monthly, and weekly calendar. I set a 4 day rotating schedule and apportion exercises seperated by opposing muscle groups. So one day could be 'shoulders', for instance, and the next could be 'chest'. Exercises are grouped and take into consideration the equipment I have and other calisthenic workouts I want to hit.

How do you measure your performance?
I've long ago stopped doing that, and feel great about this! My fitness levels right now are solely measured by my subjective observation of my own performance in the martial arts. Of course I also use my students as a benchmark of my own fitness levels since I'm still not above being competitive. In a word, I'm doing great!

How do you heal from injuries?
Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation is the recommended instruction. But I rely on a high pain tolerance level, a lot of stretching, and a sensible recovery time frame. It would be nice if I can do deep muscle massage on myself, but that doesn't work too well.

What obstacles are there to your training regime?
I enjoy my family and enjoy taking care of my 16 month old boy. Beyond the martial arts, I enjoy cooking and fishing. I am a food and wine enthusiast. Did I mention I was also halfway through a Master's in Business and Technology? And don't forget I train other people, which takes a lot of time and effort. Somewhere in there I am still working on career opportunities.

How do you get around these obstacles?
When there's a will, there's always a way. You don't have to exercise for two hours to get fit, you can always break it up into smaller circuits of even 20-30 minutes each. You can engage in alternate fitness routines like bike rides and swims. I've also been known to do squats while in the shower, or ... ... the opportunities are there, if it's what you want. One last note, I've not as yet had an antenna installed that allows me to watch TV. This has saved me so much time which has been devoted to other pursuits.

What is your philosophy about fitness and health?
I think when we refer to fitness, people sometimes focus too much on physical fitness. I have always strived to maintain a balance between my mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual fitness levels. To maintain the perspective needed, I heavily rely on instrospection, advice from close friends (like my wife), and an integrated approach to overall fitness. I have found that while this doesn't totally equate to a heart rate under 60, I have found that the resulting mental resilience and the ability to more quickly enter the 'zone' extremely beneficial when you need to be one top of your game.
